Department of Buildings

DOB is excited to introduce Pop-Up Permits (PUPs), our new pilot program for customers to get a streamlined Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for temporary use of a previously vacant building for up to one (1) year - all without going through the traditional permitting process to maximize the time the space can operate. Learn more about Pop-Up Permits (PUPs).

Ward-Based Account Managers

DOB is dedicated to better-serving residents and businesses. Our Account Managers provide wards with a single, dedicated contact, ready to assist you with issues that fall under the purview of DOB.

The fastest and most effective way to bring an issue to our attention is to submit it via our customer relationship management system. Issues submitted in this way are routed to the appropriate DOB staff member and tracked to ensure timely completion. To do this, simply email [email protected], fill out our online intake form, call (202) 671-3500, or use the chat feature on our website during normal business hours.

If you see illegal construction activity in the District of Columbia, please report it by submitting an Illegal Construction Inspection Request Form, or after-hours call 311 or visit 311's website. Give the address and describe the illegal construction, and DOB will schedule an inspection to investigate. As a reminder, all rodent, graffiti, abandoned vehicles, fallen trees, mold, or squatter-based issues should be reported to DC311 for resolution.
