A limited number of “Special Signs” can exist under District law (as defined in the District of Columbia Municipal Regulations). However, the District has a permanent moratorium on new permit issuances to erect or construct a Special Sign. Therefore, only 32 Special Signs are legally allowed to exist in the District. Owners of these existing signs may still apply for a “location change” or “copy change” permit to move the sign to a new address or make an artwork change.
