Department of Buildings

DOB is excited to introduce Pop-Up Permits (PUPs), our new pilot program for customers to get a streamlined Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for temporary use of a previously vacant building for up to one (1) year - all without going through the traditional permitting process to maximize the time the space can operate. Learn more about Pop-Up Permits (PUPs).

Housing Code Inspections

Electrical box violation

It is the mission of the Department of Buildings (DOB) to ensure your building and your unit is healthy and safe. DOB needs tenants to report any suspected housing violations. District of Columbia law requires your landlord to provide apartments that are in safe, habitable, and livable condition. The landlord has a duty to make all repairs necessary to make buildings and apartments habitable. DC law also requires landlords to maintain buildings and apartments according to many established standards.
