Commercial and residential property owners are prohibited under District law from allowing grass and weeds to grow more than 8 inches in height (Chapter 12 -6, DCMR 304.15). All exterior property and premises must be maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition.
Why Is Proper Upkeep Important?
Excessive vegetative growth can cause serious public health implications:
- Can trigger respiratory problems like asthma and allergies.
- Can be a breeding place for inserts and vermin.
- Can create hiding places for people and/or accumulating trash.
- Can cause unpleasant or noxious odors.
What Types of Excessive Vegetative Growth Does DOB Regulate?
- Weeds, grasses, kudzu, poison ivy, oak, sumac, plants with obnoxious odors, and any other causing hay fever.
- Weeds must cut after no more than seven days of growth.
How Does DOB Enforce the Rules?
- Once a property is inspected and cited for excessive vegetation (growth beyond 8 inches), a property owner has three business days to respond and comply.
- If there is no response, a re-inspection is conducted.
- If the violation still exists, DOB will arrange to abate, which can take up to four weeks after the initial inspection.
What Is the Fine?
- Failing to comply could lead to fines of $500 or more.
How to Report Overgrowth
- Have the exact address of the property ready.
- Contact 311.dc.gov or use the DOB form to schedule an inspection.
